The Kenyan community in Bedford and Queen’s Park Community Organisation held the Kenyan Independence Day celebration on Saturday 14th December at the Queen’s Park Community Centre, 52 Marlborough Rd, Bedford MK40 4LF.
Jamhuri Day is one of the most important national holidays in Kenya, observed on December 12. The holiday formally marks the date of the country’s admission in 1964 into the Commonwealth as a republic and takes its name from the Swahili word jamhuri (“republic”); December 12 is also the date when Kenya gained independence from Great Britain in 1963.
The event started at 1pm with the raising of the flag in the Harpur Square with the Mayor of Bedford, Tom Wootton. At 2pm, we gathered at the Queen’s Park Community Centre for performances, speeches, and music. Light refreshments were served. It was a delight to see OBE Bhavesh Shah, the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, and Mr Ismail Anilmis, Deputy Lord Lieutenant, attending the event, along with members of diverse communities who joined in the occasion.
