The Kenyan community in Bedford and Queen’s Park community organisation held the Kenya Independence Day on Saturday the 14th of December at the Queen’s Park community centre, 52 Marlborough Rd, Bedford MK40 4LF.
Jamhuri Day, is one of the most important national holidays in Kenya, observed on December 12. The holiday formally marks the date of the country’s admittance in 1964 into the Commonwealth as a republic and takes its name from the Swahili word jamhuri (“republic”); December 12 is also the date when Kenya obtained its independence from Great Britain in 1963.
The event started at 1pm with the raising of the flag in the harpur square with the Mayor of Bedford, Tom Wootton. At 2pm at the Queen’s Park community centre, we gathered for some performances, speeches and music. Lights refreshments was served. A delight to see OBE, Bhavesh Shah, High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, Mr Ismail Anilmis, Deputy Lord Lieutenant attending the event and members of diverse communities joining in the occasion.
