Carbon Monoxide Awareness Session with the Khush Haal Women’s Group

In January 2026, Queen’s Park Community Organisation delivered a Carbon Monoxide (CO) Safety Awareness session with the Khush Haal Women’s Group at Queen’s Park Community Centre.

The session took place in a warm, supportive environment and focused on increasing understanding of carbon monoxide — often referred to as “the silent killer” due to its colourless, odourless nature. Together, we explored:

  • What carbon monoxide is and why it is dangerous
  • The common signs and symptoms of CO poisoning
  • Practical steps people can take to keep their homes safe

To support learning with practical action, 30 free carbon monoxide alarms were distributed alongside safety leaflets. Participants were shown where alarms should be installed and how to test them correctly, helping to build confidence in using the equipment at home.

The session generated strong engagement and discussion, highlighting the importance of accessible safety information — particularly for women who may be managing caring responsibilities or facing language barriers. These conversations demonstrated how vital community-based sessions are in ensuring key safety messages reach those who need them most.

Khush Haal is a volunteer-run group that works to reduce isolation and create opportunities for learning, wellbeing and connection. This session aligned closely with the group’s “Live Well” programme, offering practical knowledge alongside routes to further support.

This activity forms part of QPCO’s Cadent-funded Carbon Monoxide Awareness Project, which aims to improve household safety and protect communities from the risks of carbon monoxide exposure.
