🌟 Celebrating 50 Years of Timor-Leste’s Independence! 🇹🇱

On Saturday 29th November 2025, we were delighted to host the Timor-Leste Independence Day celebration as part of our Back to Our Roots heritage project. This special event was a powerful reminder of the richness and strength that cultural diversity brings to Bedford.

Your presence whether as a guest, volunteer, performer, partner, or supporter, helped create an atmosphere of unity, pride and celebration. Events like these highlight why community matters: when we come together to share traditions, food, music and stories, we build stronger connections and foster a deeper sense of belonging for all.

Acknowledging Our Dignitaries

We were honoured to welcome several distinguished guests whose attendance reinforced the importance of recognising and uplifting diverse communities:

  • Camilia King – The High Sheriff of Bedfordshire
  • João Paulo da Costa Rangel – Timor-Leste Ambassador to the UK
  • Hannan Ali – Deputy Lieutenant to His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire Mrs. Susan Lousada
  • Eric Masih – Former High Sheriff of Bedfordshire for 2021-2022
  • Tom Wootton – Mayor of Bedford Borough
  • John Tizard – Bedfordshire Police & Crime Commissioner
  • Bishop Richard – Diocese of St Albans
  • Mohammad Yasin – Labour Member of Parliament (MP)

Their support and presence brought great value to the celebration and demonstrated a shared commitment to cultural inclusion, representation and community cohesion.

High Sheriff’s Praise

We were especially moved by the warm words and praise shared by the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, who expressed deep appreciation for the vibrancy of the Timorese community, the cultural performances, and the positive contribution that Timor-Leste families bring to British life. The High Sheriff highlighted the joy of experiencing the traditional dancing, hospitality and heritage showcased throughout the day. Affirming the importance of recognising and celebrating communities whose voices are often underrepresented.

Celebrating Heritage, Building Belonging

We are incredibly proud of the Timorese community for presenting their culture with such authenticity, passion and pride. Their performances, traditional banquet and storytelling captivated the audience and created lasting memories for all who attended.

At QPCO, our mission remains clear: to amplify the positive impact of diverse communities in Bedford and beyond. Too often, these celebrations do not receive the visibility they deserve. We are committed to providing meaningful platforms that honour heritage, strengthen community bonds and celebrate the identity of every group we work with.

Thank you once again to everyone who supported and contributed to this special day. Together, we continue to build a Bedford where every culture is recognised, every voice is valued, and every person feels at home.

We look forward to many more celebrations that bring our communities together.
Obrigada barak – thank you all.
